Here's an interesting article about how dysfunction replaced respectability in TV representations of families.
Quotes are always a good, quick way into a subject. Here are some pithy ones relating to fame.
Here's a story on spunky young croonette Jewel's latest image change.

These make-overs seem to be absolutely vital for musos, particularly female ones. It's the quick-changing or the dead-boring in Fameworld.

Still, I can't feel to sorry for her. She's worth millions. And she doesn't sound too bright. I mean, she started off being all soulful and earnest because she was desperate to be taken seriously. Now she’s saying, "Hey, I’ve established my cred, dudes. I’ve earned the right to be smart and sexy!"

And here she is quacking on about "irony"! That takes the cake, because the real irony is that she wouldn’t have even nailed a recording contract in the first place if she wasn’t so drop-dead gorgeous.

Let’s face it, the world is full of chicks ten times more talented than Jewel and we’ll never hear of them because they aren’t young and pretty enough to make fat old businessmen even more grotesquely rich than they are already!

(Okay, maybe that was a bit harsh. But I've got a hangover today.)
